What is Writing:

  • Important to reading because students will be expected to write throughout school whether it is a comprehension question for a content area class or a writing sample for an English or standardized test response
  • It is important that students know how to write and they are taught the skills to be successful writers
  • Writing contributes to students’ growth as readers
  • Writing enhances students’ comprehension, fluency, and recognition and decoding of words in text


How is Writing Taught:

  • Writing should be taught in an explicit and systematic way
  • Elements should include: mechanics, text generation, planning and editing, and knowledge of writing
  • Teach purpose for writing- make a plan
