What is Motivation:
Motivation refers to the affective component of reading. It is important to know the students attitude, interest, value, and self-concept in regards to reading to help plan instruction that promotes and supports their interest in reading.
Some questions to be considered when
- How do they feel about reading?
- How positive are their attitudes?
- How much do they value reading?
- What are their likes and dislikes?
- How do they value the ability to read?
- Do they view themselves as readers?
Activities to Increase Motivation:
- Book clubs or Book Talks
- Add non-fiction works (D.K. books have beautiful pictures as well as informational text)
- Use series books
- Incorporate picture books
- Graphic Novels
- Technology resources
- Bring in authors
- Provide reading time

- Elementary Reading Attitude Survey
- Reading Interest Survey
- Survey of Adolescent Reading Attitudes (SARA)
